BIOL 453.T02 class at the gazeebo of the Hofstra University Marine Laboratory in Jamaica (Maymester 2003)

  • Course Syllabus (Maymester 2003)

ABSTRACT: This field course covers the ecology of the coral reef and tropical shores. Lectures and field work focus on the taxonomy, physiology, behavior and conservation of Caribbean fishes, invertebrates, and algae. This eleven-day program is held at the Hofstra University Marine Laboratory (HUML), located in the north shore of Jamaica. Students snorkel on coral reefs and turtle grass beds, and explore tropical shoreline habitats including rocky shores and mangrove swamps. After successfully completing this course, students are able to travel anywhere in the Caribbean and instantly identify most common marine species of fishes, invertebrates and plants that you encounter, plus understand their natural history and ecology.
